Dear Hiring Team,
One thing I've learned from working with sales data: if two reports disagree, making one of them prettier won't help. First, you have to understand what each is actually counting.
That's the part of analysis I enjoy. I use SQL and Python to investigate discrepancies and automate recurring reports, so teams can spend less time debating the numbers and more time deciding what to do with them. That's why this Data Analyst role caught my attention.
The full letter continues.
The dashboard says sales increased last week. The spreadsheet says they fell. Both use the same order data. How would you investigate, and what would you tell the sales team in the meantime?
Build your answer around three steps
- Question the definitions first. Are both reports measuring the same thing? Check gross versus net sales, order dates versus payment dates, and how refunds and cancellations are counted.
- Follow the data. Pick a few orders that explain the difference and trace them through the SQL queries. Look for missing records, duplicated rows from joins, or late updates.
- Communicate before everything is resolved. Explain what you've verified, what remains uncertain, and what the team can safely conclude. Two different numbers don't always mean one is wrong.
Subject: Thank you for the conversation
Hi,
Thank you for the conversation today. The part about your weekly sales report stayed with me.
I kept wondering whether the dashboard and spreadsheet assign refunds to the same week. It's a small detail, but it can make two perfectly reasonable reports tell very different stories.
I enjoyed hearing about the problems your team is working on. They're exactly the kind of questions I like digging into.
Best,
Deniz Kaya
Merhaba,
- Her şeyin netleşmesini beklemeden durumu açıkla. Neyi doğruladığını, hangi noktaların hala belirsiz olduğunu ve ekibin mevcut verilerden hangi sonuçları çıkarabileceğini anlat. İki farklı rakam olması, mutlaka birinin yanlış olduğu anlamına gelmez.
Konu: Bugünkü görüşme için teşekkürler
Merhaba,
Bugünkü görüşme için teşekkür ederim. Haftalık satış raporuyla ilgili konuşmamız aklımda kaldı.
Panel ile Excel raporunun iadeleri aynı haftaya yazıp yazmadığını merak ettim. Bazen böyle küçük bir fark, iki raporun birbirinden çok farklı sonuçlar göstermesine neden olabiliyor.
Ekibinizin üzerinde çalıştığı sorunları dinlemek güzeldi. Bu tür konuları araştırıp çözüm bulmaktan keyif alıyorum. Sizinle çalışma fırsatım olursa çok sevinirim.
İyi çalışmalar,
Deniz Kaya
